Accommodation vendors urged to halt demanding deposit from NSFAS funded college students

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has urged landlords to not require a deposit or top-up payment from NSFAS-funded students.
This comes just after NSFAS acquired reports about some accommodation vendors who need NSFAS-funded students to pay a deposit or top-up payment to be able to get access to the accredited private accommodation.

"NSFAS reminds accommodation vendors from the obligatory conditions, as provided by the Standardised Fixed-Term Lease Arrangement between the private accommodation suppliers and NSFAS funded students," NSFAS explained in a statement on Thursday.
The Standardised Fixed-Term Lease Agreement states the lease are going to be paid month-to-month to your accommodation provider (lessor) by NSFAS, on behalf with the lessee (NSFAS funded student), in accordance using the NSFAS conditions and terms for private accommodation companies’ participation on the student accommodation portal.
"The lessor may not require or permit the lessee to pay a deposit, top-up payments, or any other forms of payment into the lessor, or almost every other person in reference to this agreement, like payment of rent, when awaiting payment from NSFAS. The lessor shall haven't any recourse in opposition to the lessee for any default during the payment of rent by NSFAS," the arrangement reads.
The NSFAS conditions and terms for private accommodation companies’ participation on the student accommodation portal also states that: "Where the NSFAS-funded student is defunded on account of an incorrect choice by NSFAS, the scholar will not be answerable for payment of any arrear rent to the accommodation supplier, up till the date of being defunded."
NSFAS stated that where the NSFAS-funded student chooses nsfas tvet to continue occupying the leased premises, notwithstanding getting defunded by NSFAS, the scholar are going to be liable for payment check here of rent into the lessor with the date of remaining defunded.

The scheme emphasised that nsfas status check any dispute arising between the parties regarding the interpretation or implementation of the agreement, must be dealt with in accordance with any dispute resolution procedure determined by NSFAS for this purpose.
